Thornby vision — Can it work?

Our daily Volusia&State section can be an interesting challenge: It’s one of the three zones of Local&State, and many days its front page shares very little in common with the front page of the main Local section.
For the October 19 section, the Volusia County bureau settled on a centerpiece story about the city of Deltona rebuilding a historic mansion that burned down three years ago.
Of course the art that they gave me was somewhat less than ideal, and there wasn’t enough time to ask the graphics staff for a locator map or help with the renderings. So my challenge became how to integrate that into a full package. This page was the result. It has some flaws, like a complicated story flow and pinched story starts — but after two hours of consultation with one of our design editors, Cassie Armstrong, I think the end result is a design that I think helps tell the story in a compelling way.
