Long exits office, a career in tatters

Our Volusia bureau has a reputation for flying by the seat of their pants.
But on the occasion of former Volusia County councilman Bill Long’s retirement, they gave me the heads-up on an upcoming timeline and retrospective they were writing on his wild and crazy career in local politics.
That gave me the time I needed to sit down and sketch out a few different permutations on the timeline. I settled on one that would be the focal point of the entire page, anchored by a live photo from Long’s final council meeting. It went through a series of permutations, live, as the county editor, design editor Stephen Komives and I negotiated what would be the best arrangement for the timeline.
It was frustrating at the time, because I was busy with the rest of the section, but the end result was an awfully strong package.
