Every Sunday, we have a focus A3 page, which we produce in advance on Thursday and Friday. This particular feature was a quiz that moved over the MCT wire from the Seattle Times, the day before the tornadoes hit in Lake and Volusia counties.
The art that moved with it was awful, so the wire editor and photo editor pulled together the mug shots that appeared in the story. That was originally going to be the page’s centerpiece, the connect-the-faces-to-the-quotes portion down-page in the final revision.
We rescheduled it to run the following Sunday, which gave me, senior designer Todd Stewart, and design editor Stephen Komives enough time to whip the page into shape.
I had the brain flash of hunting for other wire graphics, since I’m hardly an illustrator, and I came across the graphic we ended up using. From there, it was all of the little details that came together, indenting the questions, flipping the answer key upside down, putting little Scantron bubbles next to the questions (which you can’t, unfortunately, see in the JPEG).
It came out to be a pretty nice page, I think.
