Intro to Peace
NUviews

When Andy Nelson, NUviews editor and publisher, and I sat down and discussed what we wanted for our cover strategy, we came up with the idea of doing celebrity-style covers along the lines of what George did in its early days. The idea is that we would find someone who we think looks well-known on campus, concoct a setup thematically related to the cover story, do the costuming and setup and then run with the idea.

For our first issue, we selected Northwestern economics lecturer Mark Witte, one of our three superstar professors on campus. He’s posing as an instructor of the economics of peace; note the peace-sign pie chart. The implication that he was teaching economics wouldn’t have been lost on an audience who knew who Mark is.

The photo was taken by Joanna Allerhand, a reporter and photographer with whom I’ve worked many times before.

This issue disappeared from the newsstand within two days.
