The Metamorphosis of Henry M. Bowles III

Henry M. Bowles III is another campus celebrity of a sort, a student (and a friend of mine) who underwent a very radical transformation while in school from an archconservative to a moderate liberal, in a span of about a year.
It fascinated the NUviews staff enough that we asked him to write an essay about his own transformation.
Then, my task was just to try to capture Henry in his native environment, in a sense. The photo on the right-hand page is vintage Henry, relaxing and smoking a cigarette; I just got out of the way and let my photographer, Peter Stephan, make it work. The left-hand page is a composited photo-illustration, which Peter also handled, emphasizing both the “metamorphosis” angle of the story and a bad pun involving the numerals in Henry’s name.
